The Laos New Year is celebrated every year from April 13th – 15th and we were lucky enough to be celebrating in the city of Luang Prabang - known as the best place to be in Laos at this time of the year. We soon discovered why Luang Prabang was so popular as the streets became crowded with people ready to celebrate, by partaking in the water-fight that takes over the country.
We joined 6 others that we had met a few weeks earlier on the slow boat ride and we hit the streets in force. All we can say is the following 3 days were so much fun and exactly how New Year celebrations should be. Children in the streets full of smiles, water flying everywhere and a real community/family spirit.
Below are photos from our 3 days of fun, an experience we wont be forgetting anytime soon!
Guns ready – let the water fight begin!
3 Kids ready to get the next passer-by!
Duane attacking the innocent little kids.
Monks called Kim over and poured scented water full of petals over her – Happy New Year!
The unstoppable water fighting team! Awesome people = awesome fun!

Beer Lao and a water gun is all you need! If you dont want to buy a water-gun then a hole in the lid of a water bottle will do
Two very happy travellers!
Colourful Parade to celebrate the New Year
The monks were a big part of the parade and really got into the spirit of the New Year Celebrations which added to the amazing atmosphere.
Too cute!

How cool. Maybe we can organize that for a New Year celebration when u come home xx
If only we could party for 3 days like the Laos people. They are party people that’s for sure! But the water fighting is fun
Great blog guys. I am loving the waterfight photos. Looks like great fun. If you need some tips for Cambodia let me know-I have been living here for the past six months.
Thanks Tammy, we had such an amazing time in Laos – a very memorable country indeed. I’m sure we will need some tips on Cambodia so will make sure we get in contact. Thanks again for checking out the blog
Thoroughly enjoying the blog-following everything with astonishment at how many adventures two people can have in such a short time. Excellent and different food, amazing views, fighting with fist and foot (and water), and getting to really know and understand other cultures, something that many of us go through a lifetime without exposure to that. We are following your adventure on every step of your way. Much love – arohanui whanau.
Nice pics and good spirit.
So cooler to make Songkhran in Laos
We’d made it in Phuket this year but the spirit is not so fun…
Hi Eric – yes it was a fantastic few days and the vibe in the air was amazing – how I wish New Years would be at home
